NRB: Jason’s Rules of Web Design

I am currently attending the Internet Bootcamp at the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) Convention. Jason Drake, of Samaritan's Purse, just gave a great presentation on the importance of design in building a great web site.
#1 BIGGEST, most important, don't ever forget item: visual hierarchy.

He gave "Jason's rules of Web Design." Basic stuff, but worth repeating:

  1. Create a distinctive style and apply it consistently throughout the site
  2. Build on the past: classic design still works
  3. Put meaningful content on every page
  4. Content should come to the surface quickly
  5. Make the copy easy to read
  6. Use contrast effectively
  7. Use effective headlines
  8. Simplify -- don't crowd the content
  9. Design for both skimmers and deep readers

Examples of good design that Jason presented: (note: these are examples, not endorsing content)

Great job, Jason!
